WINCHBURGH celebrated another fantastic civic week with the crowning of Queen Hélène Mabon last Saturday.

After a week of events that ranged from five-a-side football and children's and adult races as well as thrilling pram races, the focus of attention turned to the village school's campus for the crowning ceremony.

In a change from years gone by,
the gala day committee decided to stage the crowning ceremony at the school campus with the procession following thereafter to Craigton Place.

And the move proved a big success with the large crowd of supporters turning up there to witness young Héléne's big occasion.

And what a day it was to be!

The 12-year-old awoke on Saturday to see sunny, blue skies greet her big day.

As the Queen's retinue formed on the podium it was champion Colin Baird's duty to read out the proclamation which he did admirably.

And local historian Andrew Pettie was given the honour of crowning young Hélène.

From the school campus, the procession, which included a Broxburn-based fire tender, Uphall Station Pipe Band, Peebles Brass Band, the West End Jazz Band and the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, made its way around the village to Craigton Place, where the youngsters enjoyed lunch at the bowling club.

Irene Wallace, chairwoman of the gala day committee, said: "From what looked an ominous start, it turned out to be a lovely day for the crowning. We were very pleased with the way everything went. The committee wish to thank everyone who came along and supported the events throughout our civic week."
