LINLITHGOW is going to be well represented in a 70-mile Highland adventure that will test the endurance and spirit of the toughest.
Four locals are taking part in "70 Wild Miles", a charity challenge that takes place on June 21 in Glencoe. In aid of CLIC Sargent, it involves a 47-mile cycle from Glencoe, a 10 mile canoe race up Loch Etive and 13 miles of running towards Tyndrum. It can be done solo or by teams.
David Easton is hoping to complete the challenge solo. The married dad of three has lived in Linlithgow for 19 years. David (42) completed the canoeing leg as part of a team 14 years ago but this time is going it alone.
He said: "I have always thought it would be a great challenge to attempt the whole triathlon myself, and a great way to raise money for a worthy cause. I decided this year that I wasn't getting any younger so I better get on with it!"
David is on a strict training regime, cycling to and from work in Cumbernauld, canoeing on the Union Canal and running round the loch and on the canal towpaths.
The electronics engineer added: "It is a long day, covering a long distance but the fact people are raising money for you spurs you on."
David aims to raise £750 and is fundraising at www.justgiving.com/davideaston70w
For the other three, it's a bit of a family affair. Derek Wolfe and his sister Rona will be canoeing for different teams while Rona's husband Soren Jensen will be running for yet another team.
Derek (39), an IT consultant for the Halifax Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh, is married with two children. He said: "It's the first time I'll be doing this, but Rona and Soren have done it before."
The teams are made up of colleagues from the Halifax Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh and the fundraising target for all three groups stands at £4000. If this target is reached, the company will match it, bringing the total to £8000.
Derek added: "My training needs to step up a pace. I am looking forward to it, although I am nervous – it's a long way to paddle!"
CLIC Sargent helps children and young adults with cancer. Last year, the event raised £70,000 and organisers hope to top that this year.
