THE site of the former Bo'ness British Legion clubhouse is "a disgrace" according to Bo'ness man Keith Robinson.
Mr Robinson contacted the Journal and Gazette this week to find out if the Cadzow Avenue site was still in British Legion ownership.

According to Mr Robinson the site, which was cleared following a fire in the semi-derelict premises, has been turn
ed into a rubbish tip and has become a health hazard.

He said: "It's a disgrace, people are using it as a dump and people in my street are very angry.

"It's been like this for years and it's time something was done."

Councillor John Constable said: "It's a bit of an eyesore and there was talk of disposal of the site by the Legion branch but I don't know if anything came of that.

"It would be possible to have Falkirk Council's environmental services department carry out an inspection of the site to determine whether or not it posed a hazard to health.

"If it is deemed to be hazardous the council could take action to clean it up and recover costs incurred from the owner — although the amenity of the site is the responsibility of the landowner in the first place."

John Bell, president of Bo'ness Royal British Legion, said: "We have been in negotiations with a firm called Baker Street Builders for the sale of the site which I believe is all but concluded.

"Site maintenance has been pretty much left up to them but we've been doing what we can including having the grass cut when possible.

"With the sale nearly concluded and plans already drawn up for its redevelopment, things should shortly improve."

The Cadzow Avenue premises were built in the 1970s but quickly became run down when it was found to have been built on unstable ground.
The branch stuck it out there until Falkirk Council declared the building unsafe.

That forced the members to seek alternative accommodation and they leased the former Kinneil Bar in Corbiehall.

Now the branch has given up its lease there and will remain active in the community but without premises of its own.

Following the eviction from Cadzow Avenue, the clubhouse quickly became run down and was set on fire by vandals.

It was then demolished and the site cleared.
